Special hazards information in NFPA 704 is found in the white section of the diamond. The three colored sections (blue for health, red for flammability, yellow for reactivity) each carry a numeric rating from 0 to 4, describing the basic hazards. The white area is specifically set aside for extra hazard information that doesn’t fit into those numbers. In that space you’ll see symbols or letters like OX for oxidizers or W with a line through it to indicate water reactivity. These notes warn responders about additional dangers and needed precautions, such as keeping oxidizers separate from fuels or recognizing materials that react with water. If there are no special hazards, the white section remains blank.
